Despite evidence of overcrowding on the Joffre Lakes trail I endeavored to hike in and camp the night at the foot of the Matier Glacier. The trail, as advertised, was very busy. It did quiet down once I passed the viewpoint at Upper Joffre Lake. The hike to the campsite on the south side of the lake was very serene. There were a 2-3 other groups set up when I arrived at about 3:30 pm. I found an excellent spot on the shore of the lake on the northernmost spur of the campground. Several more groups of campers arrived after me with a final total of about 12-15 groups. The campground has 21 sites. This was a Wednesday before the end of the school year. I can't imagine what it would be like on a long weekend in mid-summer.
